DAY 207 - VAGATOR BEACH

207) FRIDAY, 20 JANUARY 1978 : 0KMS. - VAGATOR BEACH

Here come the Hippies of GOA !

From CALANGUTE BEACH,
we drove to the north. I was walking down the ANJUNA beach, where there were some hippies relaxing and sunbathing.  From what I heard and saw, I assumed they  were American, French, Italian, German, British and etc... Then we followed the coast trying to find a beach with less hippies or no people but could not find any.  We reached finally VAGATOR BEACH  and we still had the same sight of a lot of hippies having sunbathing on the beach and swimming.

It was near dinner time, we thought it would be nice to park overnight here.  After parking, we walked around the beach area and saw that this was a genuine settlement of hippies. There were camping vehicles parked in the lot and along the foothills around a beach. The area was full of  huts made from coconut palm leaves,  lots  of hippy crowds walked to and fro busily, including many little children were there, too. Most of them barely wearing  something on their bodies.  We felt a bit awkward and uneasy being dressed as usual !!

As observed,  I thought that these hippies were "well-being", they had money to spend and loved a simple life.  They were not quite different from the people in the Stone Age !!?  Sleeping in sleeping bags on the sand or the ground (some slept on the beach), under sheds of dry coconut palm leaf huts,  inside of which there were fire pits for cooking or grilled fishes (that they might be able to catch). In the afternoon, they should go out to collect firewood or dry coconut  to make a fire and might  sit and relax,  while smoking marijuana.

During the daytime, they just let time pass,  enjoyed naked sunbathing or swimming.  They should not be anxious to see the end of the day, no one seemed being worried. I saw many groups of 2-5 people living together and everyone seems to be on his own. Each did not care about others.  Some earned pocket money by baking a special cake mixed with marijuana or banana pancake for sale, in spite of some local stores were already existed.
