DAY 27 - ANTALYA

27) SUNDAY, 24 JULY 1977 : 0KMS. - ANTALYA

My left ear have been ringing since yesterday, I felt it the whole day and became better only in the evening.  Today is the last day here. Tomorrow we should go on our way…. after having rest for several days.

Since we have been here,  we have a chance to watch Turkish  wrestling by those Turks young and adults coming to the beach. They all enjoyed doing it. It seems very popular and should be a national sport, like our Thai boxing.

There are people paying attention to our camper van, even children.  The came to peep into the interior and talk to us. Mostly we used sign language in communicating with them , I even spoke Thai with them since it did not make any difference any how --- but  some fun as they listened to me, either understanding or not.

Most Turkish women came to swim in the sea here did not wear bathing suits, one piece or two-pieces !  May be they were villagers with usual  attires, a whole series of long sleeves blouses and pants - even their headscarves were not removed.  It seems to be primarily religious practices as teachings of the Islamic religion to ban naked woman legs, arms and the heads  whenever in public.

People came to the beach mostly by trucks together  or by carts or carriages . Some of them also drove here with their farming  tractors.  How simple life it is, not much different from my country Thailand.

26) SATURDAY, 23 JULY 1977 : 0KMS. - ANTALYA

Resting at the beach near ANTALYA, we enjoyed swimming in the sea for another day.

A young Turkish guy, ALI, selling watermelons and drinking bottled water on the beach kindly invited us to have dinner with his parents. They welcomed us very friendly.

DAY 25 - ANTALYA

25) FRIDAY, 22 JULY 1977: 0KMS. - ANTALYA

With least hope we tried to dive for our lost keys in the sea. It was too windy and big waves I did not think of the miracle to find them.

TILO wore snorkel mask for diving. If found, it would be extremely fortunate. Totally, there were 5 keys. I did not know what to do, how much to pay for having new keys copied.

DAY 24 - ANTALYA

24) THURSDAY, 21 JULY 1977 : 0KMS. - ANTALYA

The beach was ideal for our camping so  we  decided to stay here for a while. Before  moving further ahead.

We enjoyed swimming in the sea  but we were in troubles finding out what happened !  We lost key for our camper van (both front and rear ) and key cabinets , the whole bunch of keys  wrapping around my  wrist, lost in the sea shallow water. It was impossible to dive and find them again.  We would need to make new copies  as soon as possible.  Fortunately that we had made a second key set as spare keys kept in the  secret part of the camper van.

Anyhow, to open and enter the camper van,  it requires much effort to loose the window screen of the driver's side.  Luckily, we had done it successfully and paid for a small child to crawl into the open window to open the door for us. Otherwise, we should have to sleep outside  on the beach.  In the worst case, we should have smashed the window , etc. to find the way into the camper van ...

Such a bad luck day !

DAY 23 - ANTALYA

23) WEDNESDAY, 20 JULY 1977 : 292KMS. - ANTALYA

Last night we parked our camper van  overnight in front of the ruined city HIERAPOLIS .  Many campers from many European countries also camped in the same area, including Turkish tourists  since it is summer time and holiday season of Europe in general.

From DENIZLI toward the east to BURDUR, we enjoyed stunning landscape of high mountains and some exotic  appearances like desert area . Some parts of the road  are of the steep , rocky mountains and some of the hills are white . I understood that they were limestone hills with winding paths  up and down.

I saw villagers were winnowing their grains by using rice basket pouring the grains at high level  so that the rice or wheat  husks and straws blown away but the grains fall down for recovery . Women in the eastern part  started to dress a lot more in oriental style.  The most popular attire I saw seemed to be   loose fabric harem pants,  a colorful floral pleated legs together at the ankles.   Women always cover their heads  at all times when outside their houses.

In coffee shops , most of which selling tea, there were many small tables . Most customers I saw were men sitting and playing dice game, a sort of Japanese Gobang.  After  a while watching,  it seemed that   2 players threw alternately his own 2 dices and move his disk on the go board according to the value of the dices.

We passed through BURDUR and continued southward to the seaside town ANTALYA to overnight  and visit the seaside near the city ( about 10 kms. away).
