DAY 137 - KANNAUJ

137) FRIDAY, 11 NOVEMBER 1977 : 209KMS. - KANNAUJ

We left  AGRA, passing rice fields, via FIROZABAD, MAINPURI to KANNAUJ.  We saw a  flock of peacocks,  parrots, herons, kingfisher, etc., not counting crows and buzzards.  A flock of parrots flew screaming very loud.  Before MAINPURI we passed a bumpy and dusty  road,  we could  hardly believe that our campervan  would run through it.

We stopped  to  overnight  at a gas station before KANNAUJ. The owner of the gas station also owns sandalwood oil factory.  He generously  invited us for tea and Indian sweets.  Before saying goodnight, he also gave us  2 small bottles of sandalwood oil.

DAY 136 - AGRA

136) THURSDAY, 10 NOVEMBER 1977 : 0KMS. - AGRA

Late last night I heard bang sounding periodically, it was the beginning sign of the  Indian Diwali celebrating.  Every  house is illuminated by candles and oil lamps to welcome Lakshmi, Goddess of wealth and learning.

In the morning, I heard surprising calls.  When I looked out to the parking lot, where it is a vast pasture and woods, I saw a  big bird on a branch.  It was  a young  peacock. So I walked a little closer and  looked  through to the ground in open area inside the woods, I saw a peahen with 3 peachicks walking behind. This was the first time I saw wild peacocks. Not far from the Taj Mahal, a flock of parrots flew screaming noisily.

In the evening, we went out  to see how the Indian people  celebrate Diwali (Deepavali) in the market (a large market). There were many people walking around with firecrackers and fireworks (they commonly played  pinwheels).

We walked passing shophouses, where  statuettes of Lord Shiva and Lakshmi were displayed (painted statuettes were sold widely for this celebration) and surrounded by sacrificial offerings,  laying  on a platform or a table covered with white cloth. There were rows of lit candles at storefronts and entrance doors.

I saw people having  their  wrists tied  around by  holy thread and having their forehead anointed by elderlies.  Some shophouses painted  a swastika sign at the entrances  (it marks the beginning  in every Hindu ceremony).

WIKIPEDIA: The swastika is recognized as a Hindu symbol in most parts of the world. In Hinduism, the swastika is at times in certain sects considered a symbolic representation of Ganesha. In Hindu rites, Ganesha is offered first offerings in every pooja. The swastika is made with Sindoor during Hindu religious rites.

DAY 135 - AGRA

135) WEDNESDAY, 9 NOVEMBER 1977 : 200KMS. - AGRA

From NEW DELHI we headed southward  through MATHURA , the city which is considered as the birth place of Lord Krishna in Hindu religion until we arrived in  AGRA.  We passed  rice fields with a flock of crows and other birds, well known as well as those unknown to me.  I saw big gray storks  walking while searching for feeds in the fields.

In the sky on certain part of the road,  vultures were flying in a circle above.  They should have spotted a dying  or dead animal on the ground and would soon swoop down to devour it.

We arrived AGRA about 4.00 pm. According to information from a guide book,  AGRA is the oldest city that has been  mentioned in the epic Mahabharata (3rd century BC), which is called AGRABANA , meaning  “heaven”  in Sanskrit.  In the 2nd century, Ptolemy the geographer in the reign of the Emperor Alexander had shown the location of the city in his map as AGARA. The name AGRA became into focus of importance in the Mughal era, during which it was held as a capital

Once in AGRA, it is a must that we visit the Taj Mahal, a monument of love of the Mughal emperor  Shah Jahan and his Queen Mumtaz Mahal.  Shah Jahan had promised before his wife's death to build a mausoleum for her body to be well known of his love for his wife everywhere. The construction of Taj Mahal took 22 years (1636-1658) to complete.

Taj Mahal ,  built with white marble,  is located on the bank of Yamuna river. It looks like a mosque with a big dome and floral moldings, which is made of stone embedded in the texture of marble (inlaid) with beautiful  different colors and patterns

The most beautiful part for me seems to be the partition in the area around the tomb  with very beautiful craftsmanship  (although it is said to be an imitation, newly made to replace the original one of precious gemstones, that has been moved to be preserved for fear of being stolen).

Taj Mahal is not the only tourist attraction for foreigners, but even Indians people are also  interested  to come to see it with their own eyes. So I saw Indian visitors in different dresses, especially the womenSome were wearing long pleated skirts, or  wrapped around  by bright colored saris.

Some women put anklets, earrings, pendant, bracelet, and nose jewelry  and even toe rings included, in particular on the index finger and middle finger.  Moreover, some people paint their soles with red color. Married Hindu women, in addition to anointing the forehead with a red dot, they  also paint the parted hair line on their head with red rouge, looking like a crack wound on the head from afar.

We took time to appreciate  the beauty of Taj Mahal in the evening until very late that I could see the reflection of Taj Mahal in the pool with fountains. It is a very beautiful building, a wonderful masterpiece that is known throughout the world , in response to the whim of Shah Jahan.

DAY 134 - NEW DELHI

134) TUESDAY, 8 NOVEMBER 1977 : 0KMS. - NEW DELHI

I intended to buy peacock-feathers  fans  ( for souvenir for my friends at home), that looked so beautiful  but they were not well made so I did not get any. At the market, I saw people  selling bundles of peacock feathers (100 feathers for RS. 10. -). I just had an idea that I could probably  buy some bundles of feathers and make some fans by myself.  However, I did not think that it would be wise to carry them around until I flew back home.

I have not seen any peacock  since our arrival in India but it seems there are plenty of peacocks in this country as there are lots of peacock-feathers for sale.

I also wanted to buy  a carved  ivory brooch for my mother but, again as always, it was not finely crafted and it was too expensive. So I could save the money  for future use !
