DAY 211 - VAGATOR BEACH

211) TUESDAY, 24 JANUARY 1978 : 0KMS. - VAGATOR BEACH

I woke up early to see the work effort of village fishermen pulling in fishing nets, laid last night, on the beach whether they had reasonable gained.

I saw the women and children sitting casting fishes from the nets. There were more smaller fishes than larger ones : sea snakes, sharks, jellyfishes,  prawns, and  crabs.

I expected they might get some  lobsters that we could buy from them  but they got only small size of prawns.  So we bought some to boil and peel for frying with eggs and pepper. It was delicious because we did not taste fresh seafood for many months.

After our breakfast , we walked  along the beach to the north about 2 kms. away.  We stopped along the way periodically.  In the early evening, on the way back, it was very low-tide that we could walk down very far on the beach. The locals came to collect shellfish from the sand as well as to catch some fishes along the rocks.

210) MONDAY, 23 JANUARY 1978 :  0KMS. - VAGATOR BEACH

Another day of relaxing, I did nothing but just lying  on the beach and observed  the hippies’activities  on the beach as well as taking a nap  the whole day.

At night, the villagers used  very large fishing  nets  to drag catching fishes in the sea.  I counted the number of  fishermen pulling the large nets, they were more than 20 people.

DAY 209 - VAGATOR BEACH

DAY 209) SUNDAY, 22 JANUARY 1978 : 0KMS. - VAGATOR BEACH

We went out to the Hippies Sunday (flea) market  at ANJUNA beach, all hippies dressed normally  and did not walk around naked as they usually did on the beach.

Many hippies were selling their goods like their own used articles and food like cake and  bread. I did not quite understand  whether it was  just for fun  or to earn their living while staying in GOA.

Besides of  hippies, there were many Indians who came to seek for articles of their interests, products from Europe.  It seemed  like an annual fair as there were  many people  packed  up as well as  foreign travelers.

At this flea market today, we met  our French friends, a couple whom we had known in Iran. The  hippies market was likely to be on every Sunday, which became the venue of the hippies weekly meeting.  They came from  nearby  beaches  or even from remote beaches in GOA.

Looking toward the beach, I did not see many people swimming in the sea.  However,  no one put a bathing suit on but swimming yet naked as fun as ever and they seemed not to care to the eyes of people wearing clothes visiting the market.

DAY 208 - VAGATOR BEACH

208) SATURDAY, 21 JANUARY 1978 : 0KMS. - VAGATOR BEACH

At last, I had to fold a handkerchief into a triangular form and sewed it as a loincloth, emulated that of  Goa fishermen, using small elastic line (fortunately having brought with us)  sewn to both ends of the triangle to be extendable to tightly fit my waist size. An elastic line was also sewn to the remaining end of the triangle but let the other end loose long enough in order to pull the fabric tight, to cover my genital area. Then it would pass between the legs to tie up with the waistband at the back while leaving the buttocks uncovered.

So I could wear my loincloth and wandered along the beach among the hippies. At least, I did not feel so different from those hippies when I went swimming   in the sea close to them.

Naked Hippies on the beach -  http://munichtomadras1977.blogspot.com

During the day, there were tourists and residents of Goa from inland villages came together in groups to the beach to see nude hippies all day.  Children seemed to be very interested, on the contrary to villagers in this area, who got used to the sight of naked hippies on the beach.  In fact, being naked seemed to be common to all as almost everybody here did the same and without any shame.
