DAY 208 - VAGATOR BEACH

208) SATURDAY, 21 JANUARY 1978 : 0KMS. - VAGATOR BEACH

At last, I had to fold a handkerchief into a triangular form and sewed it as a loincloth, emulated that of  Goa fishermen, using small elastic line (fortunately having brought with us)  sewn to both ends of the triangle to be extendable to tightly fit my waist size. An elastic line was also sewn to the remaining end of the triangle but let the other end loose long enough in order to pull the fabric tight, to cover my genital area. Then it would pass between the legs to tie up with the waistband at the back while leaving the buttocks uncovered.

So I could wear my loincloth and wandered along the beach among the hippies. At least, I did not feel so different from those hippies when I went swimming   in the sea close to them.

During the day, there were tourists and residents of Goa from inland villages came together in groups to the beach to see nude hippies all day.  Children seemed to be very interested, on the contrary to villagers in this area, who got used to the sight of naked hippies on the beach.  In fact, being naked seemed to be common to all as almost everybody here did the same and without any shame.

DAY 207 - VAGATOR BEACH

207) FRIDAY, 20 JANUARY 1978 : 0KMS. - VAGATOR BEACH

Here come the Hippies of GOA !

From CALANGUTE BEACH,
we drove to the north. I was walking down the ANJUNA beach, where there were some hippies relaxing and sunbathing.  From what I heard and saw, I assumed they  were American, French, Italian, German, British and etc... Then we followed the coast trying to find a beach with less hippies or no people but could not find any.  We reached finally VAGATOR BEACH  and we still had the same sight of a lot of hippies having sunbathing on the beach and swimming.

It was near dinner time, we thought it would be nice to park overnight here.  After parking, we walked around the beach area and saw that this was a genuine settlement of hippies. There were camping vehicles parked in the lot and along the foothills around a beach. The area was full of  huts made from coconut palm leaves,  lots  of hippy crowds walked to and fro busily, including many little children were there, too. Most of them barely wearing  something on their bodies.  We felt a bit awkward and uneasy being dressed as usual !!

As observed,  I thought that these hippies were "well-being", they had money to spend and loved a simple life.  They were not quite different from the people in the Stone Age !!?  Sleeping in sleeping bags on the sand or the ground (some slept on the beach), under sheds of dry coconut palm leaf huts,  inside of which there were fire pits for cooking or grilled fishes (that they might be able to catch). In the afternoon, they should go out to collect firewood or dry coconut  to make a fire and might  sit and relax,  while smoking marijuana.

During the daytime, they just let time pass,  enjoyed naked sunbathing or swimming.  They should not be anxious to see the end of the day, no one seemed being worried. I saw many groups of 2-5 people living together and everyone seems to be on his own. Each did not care about others.  Some earned pocket money by baking a special cake mixed with marijuana or banana pancake for sale, in spite of some local stores were already existed.

DAY 206 - CALANGUTE BEACH

206) THURSDAY, 19 JANUARY 1978 : 0KMS. - CALANGUTE BEACH

We  went  to enjoy the beauty of CALANGUTE BEACH of GOA.  On the beach there were hippies, both women and men, especially in the northern part.  They were enjoying sunbathing  and swimming  without any textiles on their bodies but bold naked.

There were also other tourists and local Indians on the beach and in the sea but I did not see anyone naked.  But most Indian tourists were curious to see nude Hippies on the beach (like me!? ),  they came to the beach and  went directly to gaze closely to the Hippies, who seemed indifferent and did not care of what was going on.  People did whatever they liked.

205) WEDNESDAY, 18 JANUARY 1978 : 200KMS. - PANAJI

We arrived  PANAJI,  the state capital of GOA, which is a popular place for hippies.  The city used to be  under Portuguese possession as colony, led by Alfonso d’Albuquerque  or commonly  known as Albuquerque  the Great  in 1510.

DAY 204 - LANJA

204) TUESDAY, 17 JANUARY 1978 : 384KMS. - LANJA

After a long stay in BOMBAY, it was time to go on  southward.  I noticed  men and women wearing their clothes alienated from what I have seen elsewhere. Women wear a  long-type loincloth but hiked up both side-ends at the waist. Most of the men, especially the elderly,  wear short thin fabrics and leave the side loosen that reveal the  dark skin of their upper thighs to the waist.  Some men just hike up the back part showing their buttocks.
